Importance of Hashtags in Your Daily Social Media Marketing






With the digital age making us go on hyper drive, we tend to categorize the important data and the unimportant jargon accordingly. In the fray of a lot of social media jargon, one thing needs to be branded into our brains for the rest of our lives: Hashtags.

Before I delve into the benefits of hashtags, one must know what it means. Hashtags are “a word or phrase preceded by a hash sign (#), used on social media sites such as Twitter to identify messages on a specific topic.” That’s the formal definition of hashtags generated by Google. Hashtags are a way to express ideas, discuss relevant topics and share experiences. It’s a way to:

  • Create trends (related to your follower’s interests)
  • Make a presence on search engines (related to your personal or corporate branding)
  • Grow participation (reach out for social engagement)



Now, the ‘why’ – Why are hashtags so beneficial to our digital marketing strategies?

Here’s why:

  • Tweets with hashtags get twice the amount of social engagement than regular tweets.
  • When Facebook first started using hashtags, there were over 600 average interactions per post.
  • On Google+, hashtags are generated automatically, according to the content of a particular post. It also allows editing or adding your own hashtag.
  • Interactions are highest on Instagram with 11+ hashtags.



In other words hashtags:

  • Increase the reach of your posts dramatically.
  • Helps you find people with similar aims and interest which definitely helps your brand presence.
  • Help you do market research to learn about your competitors.



In the world of blogs, social media, digital marketing etc- it’s a form of communication which reaches out to thousands of people in the blink of an eye. Get hashtags right and you get followers reading your every tweet, post, insta caption, snapchat story and what not. It’s a way to get your foot in the door of digital media and carve out a market of your own.
